Bird burst
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003927
A characteristic pattern on a weather radar display caused by a large flock of birds taking off at once, typically from a roosting site around sunrise. The phenomenon appears as a rapidly expanding, circular ring of low-to-moderate reflectivity on the radar image. Doppler velocity data confirms the pattern by showing outbound velocities in all directions from the ring's center, distinguishing it from precipitation.
