Candle ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004128

A form of decaying columnar ice that develops in late spring or early summer, characterized by long, slender, vertically oriented crystals resembling candles. This ice structure forms as solar radiation penetrates the ice, melting the boundaries between individual ice crystals. It is particularly fragile and can make travel over ice sheets hazardous.
