Cold wave

A rapid fall in air temperature, measured over 24 hours, to a level cold enough to require extra protection for agriculture, industry and daily activities. It results from advection of a cold air mass, and the required rate of fall and minimum temperature vary by region and season. In the United States, the National Weather Service has defined cold waves by such regional criteria.
