Flash freeze
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005613
A rapid drop in air temperature to below freezing, causing wet surfaces to quickly turn to ice. This phenomenon often occurs when rain falls onto surfaces that are already at or below freezing, or when a cold front rapidly moves into an area with standing water. Flash freezes create hazardous driving and walking conditions due to black ice formation.
