Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006301
An abnormal rise in sea level generated by a hurricane or other intense storm, exceeding the predicted astronomical tide. This phenomenon is primarily caused by the strong winds pushing water towards the shore and the low atmospheric pressure within the storm. Storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane, particularly in low-lying coastal areas.
