Index of evaporating surface of horizontal area

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006494

A dimensionless ratio of the total surface area available for evaporation within a given plot of land to the horizontal area of that plot. This index accounts for the increased surface provided by three-dimensional objects like vegetation, buildings, or uneven terrain, compared to a simple flat plane. For a vegetated area, this value is equivalent to the Leaf Area Index (LAI) and is a key parameter in models of evapotranspiration and surface energy balance.
