Leaf area index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006901

A dimensionless quantity representing the total one-sided leaf area per unit ground surface area within a plant canopy. This index quantifies the amount of photosynthetic surface available for gas exchange and light interception. It is a key parameter in land surface models for estimating evapotranspiration, carbon uptake, and energy balance within ecosystems.
