Water stress effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010118
The suite of physiological and developmental responses in a plant when its water demand exceeds the available water supply from the soil. These effects, triggered by drought, high temperature, or low humidity, include reduced photosynthesis, wilting, and leaf loss. A primary plant response to water stress is the closure of stomata to conserve water, which also limits carbon dioxide uptake.
