Quantitative precipitation estimation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010700

The process of estimating the amount of precipitation that has fallen over a specific geographic area during a defined time interval. This technique integrates data from multiple sources, including weather radar, satellite imagery, and surface rain gauges, to produce a spatially continuous field of rainfall amounts. The final output is a gridded data product where each grid cell value represents the estimated precipitation depth, expressed in units like millimeters or inches for periods such as one hour or 24 hours.
