Pluviometry

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010673

The scientific measurement of precipitation, particularly rainfall, in terms of amount, duration, and intensity. It employs instruments known as pluviometers or rain gauges to collect and quantify precipitation over a defined area and time for use in hydrological modeling, water resource management, and climatological analysis. Standard units for reporting precipitation depth are millimeters (mm) or inches (in), representing the equivalent depth of water that would cover a flat surface.
