Rain gauge

  1. An instrument used to measure the amount of liquid precipitation over a specific period. It consists of a collecting funnel that directs rainfall into a calibrated measuring tube or a tipping bucket mechanism. Measurements are typically expressed in millimeters or inches of water accumulated over a day or other defined interval.

  2. An instrument for measuring the quantity of rain that has fallen.
