Tipping-bucket rain gauge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009685

A common instrument for measuring precipitation, consisting of a funnel that collects rainfall and directs it into a small, precisely calibrated bucket. When the bucket fills to a specific volume, it tips, empties, and triggers an electrical contact, recording the event. Each tip corresponds to a known amount of precipitation, typically 0.2 mm or 0.01 inches.
