Rain factor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008365

A numerical value used in some empirical formulas to relate rainfall intensity to soil erosion. The factor quantifies the erosive power of rainfall based on its kinetic energy and intensity, which are derived from measurements of raindrop size and velocity. In the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), this is represented as the R-factor, calculated as a long-term average of storm kinetic energy times the maximum 30-minute intensity.
