Southern Oscillation index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002566
A standardized index that measures the strength and phase of the Southern Oscillation, a large-scale atmospheric pressure fluctuation between the tropical eastern and western Pacific Ocean. It is calculated based on the difference in sea-level pressure between Tahiti and Darwin, Australia. Positive values indicate La Niña conditions, while negative values indicate El Niño conditions.
A numerical index measuring the state of the Southern Oscillation. The SOI is based on the (atmospheric) pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin, Australia. It is highly correlated with tropical sea surface temperature anomaly indices recorded in Niño3.
