Surface-based lifted index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009457

A measure of atmospheric stability calculated by lifting a parcel of air from the surface dry adiabatically to its lifting condensation level, then moist adiabatically to 500 millibars, and subtracting its temperature from the ambient 500 millibar temperature. A negative value indicates instability and a potential for thunderstorms. This index is commonly used in severe weather forecasting.
