SWI
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009465
An abbreviation for the Showalter Index, a measure of atmospheric stability used in forecasting convective weather. It is calculated by lifting a parcel of air from 850 millibars to 500 millibars and comparing its temperature to the ambient 500 millibar temperature. Negative values indicate instability and a potential for thunderstorms, with values below -3 often associated with severe weather.
