Severe weather threat index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008809

A composite index calculated from atmospheric soundings to assess the potential for severe thunderstorms. It combines multiple parameters, including instability, vertical wind shear, and moisture content, into a single numerical value that quantifies the threat level. The index is often color-coded on forecast maps to provide a quick visual reference for the likelihood of phenomena such as tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
