Boyden index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004007
A stability index used in meteorology to assess the potential for thunderstorm development, calculated from atmospheric soundings. It is derived from the difference in potential temperature between the 1000 hPa and 500 hPa levels, with adjustments for humidity. Higher positive values of the Boyden index generally indicate greater atmospheric instability and a higher likelihood of convective activity.
