Tropical upper-tropospheric trough

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009810

A trough of low pressure situated in the upper levels of the troposphere, typically between 200 and 300 millibars, over tropical and subtropical latitudes. These cold-core systems, with the coldest temperatures at their center, are most common during the summer and early autumn in their respective hemispheres. A tropical upper-tropospheric trough can create vertical wind shear that hinders tropical cyclone formation, or it can provide an outflow channel that supports a storm's intensification.
