Urban canyons

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009925

The street-level spaces between tall buildings in urban areas, forming a confined atmospheric volume. These canyons significantly alter local wind flow, radiation exchange, and pollutant dispersion compared to open areas. They can trap heat, leading to higher temperatures, and concentrate pollutants, impacting air quality at street level.
