Vena contracta

The point of minimum cross-sectional area of a fluid jet that occurs downstream from an orifice or constriction. At this point, the fluid velocity is at its maximum and the pressure is at its minimum. This phenomenon is relevant in fluid dynamics, including the flow of air through narrow openings or around obstacles.
