Velum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009974
An accessory cloud formation appearing as a thin, horizontal veil or sheet that is attached to the upper part of a cumulus or cumulonimbus cloud. It forms when a strong updraft pushes moist air rapidly upward, causing condensation in a stable layer above the main cloud. Velum clouds are typically transient and indicate vigorous convection.
