Pileus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007946
A small, cap-like cloud formation that appears above or attached to the top of a rapidly growing cumulus or cumulonimbus cloud. It forms when strong updrafts push moist air rapidly upward, causing it to cool and condense just above the main cloud dome. Pileus clouds are indicative of intense convection and often precede the development of thunderstorms.
