Mother-cloud

A larger cloud mass from which smaller, distinct cloud types or features develop and detach. This primary cloud provides the moisture and atmospheric conditions necessary for the formation of subsequent clouds. For example, a cumulonimbus cloud can be considered a mother-cloud for pileus or mammatus formations.
