Mother-of-pearl clouds

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007419

Rare, iridescent clouds that form in the stratosphere at very high altitudes, between 15 and 25 kilometers. Their vibrant colors, resembling mother-of-pearl, result from the diffraction of sunlight by tiny ice crystals within the cloud. These clouds are best seen at twilight in polar regions during winter.
