Heap clouds

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010532

A common, informal name for cumulus clouds, characterized by their puffy, cotton-like appearance with flat bases and distinct outlines. They develop through thermal convection as parcels of warm, moist air rise, expand, and cool to the dew point, leading to condensation. While small heap clouds (cumulus humilis) indicate fair weather, their vertical development into cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus can signal impending precipitation and thunderstorms.
