Headwind
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010531
A wind blowing from directly ahead of an object's direction of travel. For an aircraft it lowers ground speed for a given airspeed, which shortens the takeoff and landing run but raises the time and fuel needed per distance flown, and for ground vehicles and ships it adds resistance to forward motion. Its opposite is a tailwind, which blows from behind and raises ground speed.
