Equivalent longitudinal wind

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005456

A hypothetical, constant headwind or tailwind that would produce the same effect on an aircraft's flight time between two points as the actual, variable winds encountered along the flight path. This single value simplifies flight planning and fuel calculations by averaging the impact of changing wind conditions over the entire route. A positive value indicates an equivalent headwind, while a negative value signifies an equivalent tailwind.
