Towering cumulus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002834

  1. A cumulus cloud that has undergone substantial vertical growth, characterized by a cauliflower-like appearance and extending high into the troposphere. These clouds, often designated Cumulus congestus, indicate strong atmospheric instability and vigorous updrafts. They are a precursor to cumulonimbus clouds and are associated with the potential for showers and thunderstorms.

  2. A large cumulus cloud with great vertical development, usually with a cauliflower-like appearance, but lacking the characteristic anvil of a Cb. (Often shortened to "towering cu," and abbreviated TCU.)
