Wave-front method

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010843

A graphical or numerical technique for predicting the future position of a propagating linear feature, such as a cold front, gust front, or squall line. The method treats points along the current front as sources of new disturbances, with the front's position at a later time determined by the envelope of these propagating disturbances. This approach is a practical application of Huygens' principle to track the advection and development of atmospheric boundaries over short time scales.
