The point in time when the cumulative net revenue from a well or project equals the total capital investment and operating expenses incurred to that date. After payout, the project begins to generate a net profit for the investors. This milestone is a key metric in project economics and determines when certain financial obligations, such as the reversion of a carried interest to a partner, are triggered.
