GWAS

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-003700

  1. A study that compares DNA markers across the genome (the complete genetic material in a person) in people with a disease or trait to people without the disease or trait. These studies may uncover clues to help prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Also called genome-wide association study.

  2. A method used to identify inherited genetic variants associated with risk for a particular disease or trait. A GWAS looks at the entire genome for genetic variants, usually single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), that tend to occur more often in individuals with the disease or trait being studied than in those without the disease or trait. Also called genome-wide association study.
