lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-004993

  1. A radioactive drug used to treat adults with PSMA-positive prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and has not responded to treatments that lower testosterone levels. It is used in patients whose cancer has been treated with an androgen receptor inhibitor and who can either delay or have received treatment with a type of anticancer drug called a taxane. Lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan binds to a protein called PSMA, which is found on some prostate cancer cells. It gives off radiation that may kill the cancer cells. Lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan is a type of radioconjugate. Also called Pluvicto.

  2. A radioconjugate composed of PSMA-617, a human prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeting ligand, conjugated to the beta-emitting radioisotope lutetium Lu 177 (177Lu), with potential antineoplastic activity against PSMA-expressing tumor cells. Upon intravenous administration of lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan, vipivotide tetraxetan targets and binds to PSMA-expressing tumor cells. Upon binding, PSMA-expressing tumor cells are destroyed by 177Lu through the specific delivery of beta particle radiation. PSMA, a tumor-associated antigen and type II transmembrane protein, is expressed on the membrane of prostatic epithelial cells and overexpressed on prostate tumor cells.
