pamidronate disodium

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-006276

  1. A drug used to treat hypercalcemia (high blood levels of calcium) caused by cancer and bone damage caused by multiple myeloma or by breast cancer that has spread to the bone. It is also used to treat Paget disease of the bone. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Pamidronate disodium may help keep bone from breaking down and prevent the loss of calcium from the bones. It is a type of bisphosphonate. Also called Aredia.

  2. The disodium salt of the synthetic bisphosphonate pamidronate. Although its mechanism of action is not completely understood, pamidronate appears to adsorb to calcium phosphate crystals in bone, blocking their dissolution by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. This agent does not inhibit bone mineralization and formation.
