Environmental quality standard

A legally binding limit on the concentration of a pollutant in a specific environmental medium, such as water or air, designed to protect human health and the environment. These standards are derived from environmental quality objectives and are used to regulate discharges and emissions. Compliance is often enforced through monitoring and penalties.
