Risk perception

The subjective assessment that individuals or groups make regarding the probability and severity of a potential harm. This judgment is influenced by personal experience, beliefs, and the way information about the risk is communicated. Risk perception can differ significantly from scientifically determined risk assessments, affecting public policy and individual behavior toward chemical exposures.
