The recording of digital information on a storage medium for later retrieval by a computer or other device. It encompasses both volatile memory, like Random Access Memory (RAM) which requires power to maintain data, and non-volatile storage, which retains data without power. Non-volatile media include magnetic disks (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), optical discs, and magnetic tape.
