A system for annotating a document in a way that is syntactically distinguishable from the text itself. These annotations, or tags, provide instructions on how the document's structure, formatting, or other properties should be interpreted or displayed. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is a common example used for web pages, defining elements like headings, paragraphs, and links.
