MIME type

A standard that indicates the nature and format of a document, file, or byte stream, originally designed for email attachments but now widely used in web protocols. It consists of a type and a subtype, separated by a slash, such as "text/html" for HTML documents or "image/jpeg" for JPEG images. Web browsers use MIME types to determine how to handle received content.
