An application programming interface (API) that provides services for applications on different computers to establish connections and exchange data across a local area network. The Network Basic Input/Output System offers three distinct services: a name service for registration and resolution, a session service for connection-oriented communication, and a datagram service for connectionless messaging. A NetBIOS name is a unique 16-character string used to identify a network resource, with the final byte specifying the service type.
