A standard application-layer protocol for retrieving email from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. It allows users to download email messages to their local computer and then delete them from the server, or leave them on the server. The current version, POP3, operates on port 110 for unencrypted communication and port 995 for encrypted communication.
