Formerly, the core incorporated place(s) or a census designated place(s) of an urban area, usually consisting of the most populous place(s) in the urban area plus additional places that qualify under Census Bureau criteria.
This concept was retired prior to the 2010 Census with the introduction of the 2010 Census urban area criteria.
