Reason for moving
Term · Economic statistics · MLC-T-ECS-001592
The Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey (CPS-ASEC) asks people who had a different residence 1 year ago the main reason for their move. Similar questions, with different categories, appear also on the American Housing Survey Branch and Island Areas Census. The response categories for CPS-ASEC are:
• Change in marital status
• To establish own household
• Other family reason
• New job or job transfer
• To look for work or lost job
• To be closer to work/easier commute
• Retired
• Other job-related reason
• Wanted to own home, not rent
• Wanted new or better house/apartment
• Wanted better neighborhood/less crime
• Cheaper housing
• Foreclosure/eviction (was coded separately in 2011 and added as a response in 2012)
• Other housing reason
• Attend/leave college
• Change of climate
• Health reason
• Natural disaster (added as a response in 2006)
• Other reasons
The reason for moving question in CPS-ASEC is asked of all movers rather than movers to the area. For the Island Area Census, all people who were born outside of the area were asked their reason for moving. Respondents were given the following nine reasons from which to choose:
• Employment
• Military
• Subsistence activities
• Missionary activities
• Moved with spouse or parent
• To attend school
• Medical
• Housing
• Other
This question is asked on the American Samoa, Guam, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Census.
