Alluvium
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-001138
1. Unconsolidated material (sediment) deposited by flowing water.
2. Sediment deposited by flowing water, such as in a riverbed, floodplain, or delta.
3. Natural accumulations of unconsolidated clay, silt, sand, or gravel that have been transported by water, wind, or gravity to their present position.
4. A general term for unconsolidated material (e.g. clay, silt, sand, gravel) deposited from running water. Often a sorted or semi-sorted sediment in the bed of a stream or on its floodplain or delta. The deposit may be in the form of an alluvial fan.
5. Deposits of clay, silt, sand, gravel, or other particulate material that has been deposited by a stream or other body of running water in a streambed, on a flood plain, on a delta, or at the base of a mountain.
6. Clay silt, sand, gravel, or other rock materials transported by flowing water and deposited in comparatively recent geologic time as sorted or semi-sorted sediments in river beds, D-1 estuaries, and floor plains, in lakes, on shores and in fans at the base of mountain slopes. The term is not applied to subaqueous sediments deposited in seas or lakes or to non-sorted sediments carried or deposited by glaciers.
