Beneficiation
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-002989
1. Improvement of the grade of ores by milling, flotation, sintering, gravity concentration, or other processes.
2. The use of milling, flotation, sintering, gravity concentration or other processes to allow the desired mineral to be separated from ore for use for further processing. For regulatory definition, see 40 CFR Part 261.
3. The processing of ores to regulate the size of a desired product, remove unwanted constituents, and improve the quality, purity, or assay grade of a desired product. Concentration or other preparation of ore for smelting by drying, flotation, or magnetic separation.
4. Physical treatment of crude ore to improve its quality for some specific purpose. Also called mineral processing. RCRA defines beneficiation as: restricted to the following activities: Crushing; grinding; washing; dissolution; crystallization; filtration; sorting; sizing; drying; sintering; pelletizing; briquetting; calcining to remove water and/or carbon dioxide; roasting, autoclaving, and/or chlorination in preparation for leaching; gravity concentration; magnetic separation; electrostatic separation; flotation; ion exchange; solvent extraction; electrowinning; precipitation; amalgamation; and heap, dump, vat, tank, and in situ leaching. See 40 CFR 261.4 (b)7 for more information.
5. A set of processes used to reduce the particle size of mined ore to allow the desired mineral to be separated from wastes and either used or further processed
6. Preparation of ores to regulate the size (including crushing and grinding) of the product, to remove unwanted constituents, or to improve the quality, purity, or grade of a desired product.
7. Process of washing the rock to remove impurities or to separate size fractions.
8. Dressing or processing of gold bearing ores for the purpose of - (i) Regulating the size of, or recovering, the ore or product,(ii) Removing unwanted constituents from the ore, and(iii) Improving the quality, purity, or assay grade of a desired product.
9. The use of milling, flotation, sintering, gravity concentration or other processes to allow the desired mineral to be separated from wastes and used.
10. The preparation of ores to regulate the size (including crushing and grinding) of the product, to remove unwanted constituents, or to improve the quality, purity, or grade of a desired product.
