Bioaccumulation Factor

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-003119

1. The ratio of the concentration of a contaminant in an organism to the concentration in the ambient environment at steady state, where the organism can take in the contaminant through ingestion with its food as well as through direct contact.

2. The concentration of a substance in tissue of an organism divided by its concentration in an environmental medium in situations where the organism and its food are exposed (i.e., accounting for food chain exposure as well as direct chemical uptake).

3. In natural environments, a bioaccumulation factor, or BAF, is the ratio of the chemical concentration in an animal to the amount of chemical to which it is exposed through all routes, including the food chain.
