Bioconcentration Factor
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-003152
1. Ratio of the concentration of a chemical in an organism to the concentration of the chemical in its surrounding aqueous environment. BCF values are surrogate measures of the bioaccumulation potential of a chemical in organisms in the environment.
2. The concentration of a substance in tissue of an organism divided by the concentration in an environmental medium (e.g., the concentration of a substance in an aquatic organism divided by the concentration in the ambient water, in situations where the organism is exposed through the water only).
3. The ratio of the chemical concentration in the animal (e.g., fish) or plant to the chemical concentration in the surrounding environmental media (e.g., water, soil).
