Data Validation

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-007348

1. An analyte- and sample-specific process that extends the evaluation of data beyond method, procedural, or contractual compliance (i.e., data verification) to determine the analytical quality of a specific data set.

2. A term with a different meaning to different persons. Clarification should be sought when this term is used during project planning and implementation. The EPA Office of Environmental Information (OEI) Quality Staff defines data validation as an analyte- and sample-specific process that extends the evaluation of data beyond method, procedural, or contractual compliance (i.e., data verification) to determine the quality of a specific data set.

3. The act of verifying the value of data, usually by comparing the data with other data sources. For satellite data, often ground or aircraft based measurements at a particular time and location will be compared to determine how well the data correlates.

4. Process of determining that the data satisfy the requirements as defined by the data user. [QA Glossary]

5. To establish or verify accuracy. For example, using measurements of temperature or precipitation to determine the accuracy of climate model results.

6. The process of determining that the data satisfy the requirements as defined by the data user.
