Glutathione-S-Transferase
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-012381
1. A transferase that catalyzes the addition of aliphatic, aromatic, or heterocyclic free radicals as well as epxodies and arene oxides to glutathione. Addition takes place at the sulfur. It also catalyzes the reduction of polyol nitrate by glutathione to polyol and nitrite.
2. A class of enzymes that catalyze the reaction of glutathione with an acceptor molecule (an arene oxide) to form an S-substituted glutathione; a key step in detoxification of many substances; start of the mercapturic acid pathway.
