Hydraulic gradient
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-013602
1. The change in total potentiometric (or piezometric) head between two points divided by the horizontal distance separating the two points.
2. Slope of a water table or potentiometric surface. More specifically, change in the hydraulic head per unit of distance in the direction of the maximum rate of decrease.
3. The direction of ground water flow due to changes in the depth of the water table.
4. The slope of the hydraulic grade line. This is the slope of the water surface in an open channel, the slope of the water surface of the groundwater table, or the slope of the water pressure for pipes under pressure.
5. In general, the direction of groundwater flow due to changes in the depth of the water table.
